Dungarvan C.B.S has a long tradition in the promotion of Hurling and Gaelic football. There is evidence that hurling was played in the school at least as early as 1919. C.B.S students and former students were to the forefront in All Ireland winning Waterford hurling teams since the 1920s.

In 1948 Waterford won both the Minor and Senior hurling All Irelands. CBS boys Tom Cunningham, Michael Hogan, Maurice McHugh and P O Connor played in the minor hurling All Ireland. Other CBS boys on the panel included John Boyle, Michael Shalloe and Donal Whelan.Donal Whelan came on as a substitute. Past pupils of the CBS who participated in the first Senior All Ireland win were Jackie Goode, Johnny O Connor, Christy Moylan and Tom Curran. In 1959 Waterford won the Senior hurling All Ireland. Austin Flynn (Abbeyside) and Tom Cunningham (Dungarvan) -both former C.B.S students- were outstanding defenders on this team whilst legendary goalkeeper and coach-Ned Power was also a CBS boy (See Sports Pictures below). The great John Kiely and Donal Whelan were outstanding forwards on the same team. Tom Cunningham played on the Waterford Senior football team which defeated Kerry in 1957. Tony Mansfield (Abbeyside) was a member of the Waterford Senior Hurling panel which reached the All Ireland Final in 1963. In 1951 and 1953 Dungarvan C.B.S won the Dean Ryan Cup (Munster U-16 A hurling) and reached the final in 1952 and 1954. CBS also participated in the Frewen Cup (football).

The Rice Cup has also spawned a great hurling rivalry between C.B.S schools in Waterford, Tipperary, Cork and Kilkenny. In 1992, 7 C.B.S students won Munster Minor hurling medals with Waterford whilst Three won U-21 All Ireland hurling medals. In recent years the school has had numerous successes in both hurling and Gaelic football. Hurling and Gaelic football leagues are played during games periods.
